It's What They Do...
When talking about the injury to Kevin Everett, both Bills coach Dick Jauron and starting QB JP Losman stated that it is unfortunate that things like that happen, but it is what they do. Essentially, they know what they are getting into and know the risks. They are football.
They were not being insensitive to the issue. Seeing a teammate go down like that is like having the same happen to your sibling. But wanting to be the best at what they do, in this case football, has its risks.
Well I came across an article in which the writer thinks that video games has desensitized a generation to NFL injuries.
We are not robots. Saying the "video game generation" cannot tell the difference from fantasy and reality is completely absurd. NFL football players do not go out looking to injure others (at least we hope not) and it is unfortunate when injuries do happen. But like Jauron and Losman said, "it is who they are".
I think what the writer should be more concerned about is how NFL players are treated following career-ending injuries; not whether the "video game generation" can separate Madden '08 from what really happens on Sundays.
