Suck On That Cheerleader Yell Leader

Joe Paterno won his record 23rd bowl game last night after his Penn State Nittany Lions overcame a two touchdown deficit and downed Texas A(and)M, 24-17, at the Valero Alamo Bowl.

It was Paterno's 500th career game, and his 372nd victory, one behind Bobby Bowden for most in major college football.

On Thursday, an Aggies spirit leader yell leader, yelled that Paterno was "on his death bed" and "someone needs to find him a casket."

I love how they have their little dances and do not leave the stage until they complete them all. "Yell Leaders," like that is going to save any of their reps of being part of the male species.

As much as I hate the New England Patriots and watching their games, I must say that was one of the most entertaining games of the year. The four games in which they trailed (Colts, Ravens, Eagles, and Giants) proved to be the best games to watch this regular season.

Needless to say if you follow sports, but the Patriots completed their perfect regular season by beating the New York Giants, 38-35, making them the first 16-0 team in NFL history.

And that is not the only history breaking stat that was broken on the night. Tom Brady broke Peyton Manning's single season TD record by throwing his 50th TD of the year. Randy Moss broke Jerry Rice's single season TD record by catching his 23rd TD of the year. And finally, the Patriots scored a single season record 589 points on the year.

It was hard to believe that the Patriots would lose even as I watched the Giants move to a 28-16 advantage. Somehow, someway, you knew that Bill Belichick and Brady were going to find a way to win.

Hats off to Eli Manning and the Giants for showing up for this big game. I was worried that this game would get out of hand quickly and that Manning would have been pulled from the game if that happened. But Manning came up BIG for the Giants, keeping them in the game by throwing 4 TDs and only one pick.

This has to be a confidence builder for Manning and the Giants heading into the playoffs and their first round match-up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They can look themselves in the mirror and say "we can hang with the best in the league".

If you give the Patriots any light of hope they will eat you up. As soon as the Giants turned the ball over, the Patriots took advantage by scoring off of the turnover.

Good luck to any team that faces the Pats in the playoffs. They will need a perfect, flawless game to defeat the Pats... just like how the season gone for New England.

He Is Still There

And that is a good thing if you are a Lakers fan.

I must admit, I thought for sure that KB24 would have been traded from the Lakers this NBA season. But, after watching the Lakers move to 19-10, I think Kobe may be thinking of a permanent stay with the purple and gold.



Andrew Bynum has blossomed into the big man that the Lakers brass envisioned and have solid leadership in veteran Derek Fisher. Kareem Abdul Jabbar needs to be considered for coach of the year award, or at least assistant coach of the year based on his work he has done with Bynum.

Like I said before the season started: Bynum for most improved player of the year.

Mitch Kupchak has to be sporting a small smile because he did not trade Bynum, even though Lakers fans were calling for it when word came out that Jason Kidd was available at the cost of the young center.

The Lakers have beaten some of the Western Conference's top teams: San Antonio, Denver (twice), Golden State, and Phoenix (twice).

Lets not get ahead of ourselves though. The Lakers started last season at a 27-13 mark through the first 40 games, before stumbling to a 42-40 record due to injuries/motivation. But this squad will not fall down like last year.

Not with the tough bulldog that is Fisher in the locker room, or with Bynum becoming an elite NBA center.

Ask the Lakers if the regular season victories over the Western Conference elites mean anything, and you will get an answer Belichick-like: "It does not mean anything unless we can do it in the playoffs." Even the opposing coaches that get beat by the Lakers will agree.

But do not be fooled, the mental strength that is being built during the season with their big wins will make this Laker squad dangerous come playoff time. Western Conference champions dangerous.

Baseball Winter Meetings

It is that time again.

The time when all baseball fans wonder and dream about moves that their favorite baseball team will make in the offseason. So many expectations all filled with hope.

Who will they sign? Who will be traded? What rumors will come true?

Johan Santana is on the trading block and the AL East rivals, Boston and New York, and fighting for his arm. But will a wild card team pick him up? Does he want to stay on the East Coast versus the West Coast? What about his no-trade clause?

Boston or New York will pay the money to give Santana the extension he is seeking if he is traded. There is no better way to stick it to your rival than to sign the best pitcher in the majors. Like I said in the past, Boston is the new evil empire. Ultimately I think that Boston has the upper hand on a deal over the Yankees. They have the young, talented center fielder in Jacoby Ellsbury to roam around in place of Torii Hunter.

And how about Miguel "Jabba the Hutt" Cabrera?

I think he ends up with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim by the end of this week. Arte Moreno has said that they had a deal in place and was frustrated over the talks.

"I've felt we had a deal with them twice," Moreno said of the Marlins, who apparently cut bait and decided they needed more in exchange for the 24-year-old slugger.

Do not mess with a frustrated Mexican. This deal will get done. They have plenty of young talent for the Marlins and have multiple players that play the same position that will not hurt the Angels too badly.

Andruw Jones? Word around the block is that the Dodgers are hot on Jones, with the outfielder seeking the money that Hunter got from the Angels.

Erik Bedard and Miguel Tejada are said to be on the trading block as well. Both will help any team, especially Bedard and his strong arm.

There will be some happy fans and some disappointed fans no matter what, and lots of hope will be lost.

Have fun at the bar arguing with your buddies about why your team will be making the best moves. I know I will.

Bull Chit System

Kansas over Missouri? USC playing a 3-loss Illinois team? That is one messed up computer; it must be a PC crunching the numbers.

How does Kansas get a BCS bowl berth over Missouri? Does the computer have a short term memory? Missouri lost against Oklahoma in their last game, but did eliminate Kansas from Big 12 title race. So how exactly does Kansas get the bid over the Tigers? The operating system for the computer must be using Vista. Who did Kansas beat to leapfrog Missouri?

Please, please get rid of this system.

And this next statement is coming from a UCLA fan: How the hell is USC playing Illinois?

USC is one of the hottest teams in the nation and will steamroll all over Illinois. The Rose Bowl is going to be the Rose Bore. At least my uncle will be happy with an easy victory. Isn't the point of the BCS games to have the most competitive games of the year? I really think that USC could beat any of the teams in the BCS games, including Ohio State and LSU.

Ohio State had a tough schedule. Youngstown State, Akron, Kent State, Northwestern, the list can go on. That is going to be a great game to watch. LSU is going to poo on the Luckeyes.

The other two games I like.

West Virginia v. Oklahoma is going to be a fun game to watch. The Sooners are just as hot as the Trojans and will win this one. And then you have Colt Brennan and Hawaii taking on Georgia in the next best game on tap.

Meanwhile I get to enjoy another UCLA Las Vegas Bowl this year. As I do every year, I will bet against the Bruins; they suck in bowl games.
